Gabriel Gómez Sánchez, José Misael Silva Bernal, and Nadia Valentina Valencia Yepes Tragically Die in Cessna Plane Crash in Vaupés, Colombia

On Monday, a devastating plane crash in the Colombian Amazon claimed the lives of four individuals aboard a Cessna aircraft. The crash occurred just two minutes after takeoff from Mitú, the capital of Vaupés, a department surrounded by dense jungle. The plane, registered as HK-641, was en route to a small town when it lost contact and was later found completely incinerated. The bodies of all four occupants were found with no survivors.

Among the victims were three state officials from the National Civil Registrar's office: Gabriel Gómez Sánchez, José Misael Silva Bernal, and Nadia Valentina Valencia Yepes. They had been on a mission to assist with voter registration in preparation for Colombia's upcoming legislative elections in March 2026.

The Colombian Civil Aviation Authority launched a search and rescue operation, eventually confirming the tragic loss. The National Civil Registry expressed deep condolences, highlighting the significant contributions of the three dedicated officials to the electoral process. “We offer our deepest condolences to their families and colleagues,” the agency said in a statement.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, as authorities continue to work on recovering the wreckage and determining the cause of the accident.
