Casey Nelms Tragically Dies Following Officer-Involved Shooting During Welfare Check in McAlester, OK

Casey Nelms, a member of the McAlester community, tragically passed away on November 11, 2025, after a welfare check escalated into an officer-involved shooting. The incident occurred around 1:14 p.m. on the 500 block of West Park Avenue, where McAlester Police Department officers had responded to a call for a welfare check.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), when officers made contact with Nelms, he brandished a knife and advanced toward them. The officers then used deadly force. Emergency medical teams performed life-saving measures on Nelms at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The OSBI has initiated a full investigation, working in collaboration with the McAlester Police Department and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The investigation seeks to uncover the details leading up to this tragic loss, and the community is awaiting further clarity on the situation.
