Madge Terry Thompson, Respected Civil Rights Advocate, Passes Away After Battling Cancer in Seattle, WA

Madge Terry Thompson, a beloved member of the Seattle community and tireless advocate for civil rights, passed away after a long battle with Small Cell Lung Cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones, leaving a legacy of dedication to justice and equality.

Madge, who was given only months to live after her diagnosis in early spring, fought courageously beyond expectations. Her spirit and love for life kept her going for many months, continuing to contribute to causes that she held dear.

For decades, Madge was a vital part of the NAACP Seattle chapter, ensuring thousands of marchers were well-fed during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations. Her unwavering commitment to her community was felt by everyone she served.

Madge was also a proud member of the historic Cayton family, known for their contributions to African American history. Her mother, Lilian Revels Cayton, was part of the pioneering family that founded The Seattle Republican, the first Black-owned newspaper. Additionally, Madge was the descendant of Horace Revels Cayton, the first Black senator in the U.S. Congress.

A celebration of Madge’s life will take place on Friday, October 3rd, 2025, at The Church by the Side of the Road. Her family, friends, and the community she so deeply loved will gather to honor her incredible life and the impact she made in fighting for justice and equality.
